Barley Grains
Hordeum vulgare
Also known as: Jau, jou, barley, feed barley

About Barley Grains
A starchy cereal grain with moderate protein, widely used as an energy source in ruminant concentrates. Barley is usually rolled or coarsely ground before feeding to improve digestion.
Nutritional value and use in livestock rations
Barley Grains is a concentrate feed and an energy source in the Pakistan Feed Library. On average barley grains contains crude protein 12.0% of dry matter, metabolisable energy 3.0 Mcal/kg, TDN 83.0% of dry matter, NDF 22.0% of dry matter.
Energy concentrates such as cereal grains and by-products raise the energy density of a ration. They are fed together with forage for fibre and with protein sources and minerals to keep the ration balanced.
Nutrient values vary with variety, growing conditions, processing and storage, so treat the averages as a guide. Send us your ration details if you would like advice on using it in a TMR.

- Literature values
SD = standard deviation DM = dry matter. Nutrients other than dry matter are expressed on a dry-matter basis. TDN = total digestible nutrients; ME, NEm, NEg, NEl and DE = metabolisable, net (maintenance / gain / lactation) and digestible energy.
Data note: Typical values for guidance. Actual composition varies with variety, stage of growth, processing and batch.
